Winter Driving Tips

12/28/2015

As we head into winter, it is very important to practice safe driving habits to minimize your risk of accident.

One important thing of note when driving in the winter months is that the sun’s angle is quite severe.  Especially when heading west in the afternoons, the severe angle of the sun can have a blinding effect on motorists.  Winter also finds many more people on the road who have had a bit too much to drink at holiday parties.  It is also the rainiest season in the Pacific Northwest.

These dark winter days can be very dangerous for motorists.  Rain and blinding sun are two huge causes of accidents.

There are a few things that you can do to avoid accidents:
  • One of the most important preventive measures you can take is to keep your windows clean.  The ability to see in front of you is critical.
  • As soon as the rains begin, please purchase new windshield wipers.  Use your windshield wipers as soon as moisture begins to collect on your windshield.
  • If it is raining or cloudy, always drive with your headlights on.  If you need to use your wipers, the law requires that your headlights must be on too.  The purpose of your headlights is to help you see, but equally important is that they help others see you too.
  • Do not send or view text messages while driving!
  • Do not use earphones of any kind while driving, doing so is a violation of RCW 46.37.480.  Hands-free devices are permitted, and there is no need to obstruct your ears at all. The law allows you to obstruct one ear but I would recommend not doing so because you could confuse the sound of an emergency vehicle with something you are listening to.
Be a defensive driver by following these tips, and have a safe and prosperous new year!
